Nuclear Core Design Engineer (SMR)
Job Title: Core Design Engineer (SMR)
Location: Madrid, Spain
Job Description:
Holtec International is seeking Nuclear Engineers experienced in reactor engineering and analysis to work on the development of core analysis methodologies, and the associated plant system emulators, as needed for development and licensing of the SMR-160 small modular reactor. Primary responsibilities include design, modeling, and analysis of the nuclear core and evaluation of the fuel cycle performance for the SMR-160 passive, natural circulation, integral light water reactor. Principal modeling and analysis tools include CASMO5, SIMULATE5, MCNP, and SCALE.
The SMR-160 core design engineers are responsible for developing analytical methods and analyses used to design and license the Holtec International SMR-160 Nuclear Power Plant. Personnel perform reactor core analyses of steady states and anticipated transients to demonstrate that the SMR-160 meets or exceeds its safety basis and NRC licensing requirements. Design and analysis work addresses aspects of reactor performance that include a wide range of physical phenomena, including nuclear, thermal hydraulic, heat transfer, transient kinetics, two-phase flow, reactor protection system setpoints and methodologies, and plant control system functions. Personnel also perform validation and benchmarking of the analytical tools to demonstrate their applicability to the SMR-160 design.
Specific Areas of Responsibility:
- Develop analytical models in the CASMO/SIMULATE code package for the design and analysis of the SMR-160 core.
- Develop fuel cycle to optimize fuel utilization and margins to safety limits using CASMO/SIMULATE code package.
- Support the development of core analysis methodologies and plant emulator tools to facilitate (1) safety analysis of transient and postulated accident scenarios related to the SMR-160 and (2) operational system responses to model inputs (e.g. start up, power ascension, and transients) related to the SMR-160 design and operation
- Integrate with other engineering groups performing aspects of component, system, fuel, and control system design.
Minimum Requirements:
- M.S. in nuclear engineering or physics (or closely related field) from an accredited college or university
- Seven to ten years of experience in neutronics analysis, including fuel cycles and core design.
- Demonstrated neutronics analytical skills including at least five years of experience with CASMO/SIMULATE or other similar reactor analysis code packages.
- Demonstrated technical writing skills through FSAR, DCD, responses to RAIs, and publications.
- Demonstrated effective communication skills.
- Eligible to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.
Desired Qualifications:
- PhD in nuclear engineering or physics.
- Fifteen years of experience in core design and reactor physics analysis.
- Ten years of experience with CASMO/SIMULATE.
- Comprehensive knowledge of NUREG-0800 (NRC Standard Review Plan for LWRs) Chapter 4 and 15 requirements.
